Finca de los Perezosos [The Lazy Man´s Farm]

The secret is in the Garbage

The mission of La Finca de los Perezosos is to provide a model for sustainable and productive farming through incorporating organic materials into the agricultural systems.  We show that this model can be repeated and implemented anywhere in Panama and throughout Central America.

So... Grow Trash (dat is organic material to u educated folks),

lots of Trash.

Put Trash on top of soil.      Permaculture says "Chop and Drop."

Simple enough?

What we are doing differently is putting organic material on top of the soil,  composting in place without even chopping up. Secondly, we are growing material for composting  where we will use it. These are not original ideas but it´s important that we share them with you.

For a few minutes put aside your ideas about growing crops.  Let´s examine a different way.  By copying nature and with a few other techniques, we can improve our soil and harvests.  Nature produces incredible quantities of all kinds of stuff without chemicals. We can observe in nature that there is biodiversity, the plants  and animals use one another, there are various times for ripening and production of flowering plants.

Nature does not irrigate, weed, plow, till, slash, burn, or apply chemical fertilizers or poisons. And the only plague is us.

When leaves and such fall to the ground, they decompose and make compost.  In the tropics, however, plants immediately grow up from this compost so tropical soil is seldom more than one inch thick.  All the richness is up in the air, in the trees and plants. (see soil and fertilizer).  This makes for enormous problems in the tropics when people burn their plant matter. There goes all the richness built up over eons because they simply don´t know a better way.

So what happens if we copy nature?
